Greggory’s eyes shifted from Sam to Adaline and then back to Sam before his gaze dropped to the floor.

“I am sorry to have caused you annoyance, Walker. I extended the ward to physical. I thought there was a gap in the protections,” Greggory said quietly.

The Walker glared, causing the air in the room to vibrate with power. “I am not sorry for the pain I caused you, thief. Do not touch that which is mine again. You will make amends to the Mother of Life for the harm you’ve dealt her. And you will apologize to my Mistress for touching that which was hers.”

Adaline smacked Samuel on the arm. When he looked at her, Mistress Life rolled her eyes at him.

“Okay,” Sam said with a shrug. “She doesn’t want an apology. She says thank you for trying to keep them safe.”

Ben’s eyes were bugging out of his head. “What just happened there?”

“He does that,” Jess said, nonchalant.

“Kids, are you hungry?” Clyde asked.

“Thank you, but we ate before we came inside,” Sam said.

Clyde’s eyebrows inched up. “You’ve adopted the berries and lettuce diet?”

“No, we went to the lake house and had pancakes,” Sam said. “I think I figured that space thing out.”

“You will now do all business travel forever. I’m never sitting on another business flight again,” Hank declared.

Sam shook his head. “I don’t think I’m going to work anymore. Kinda done with that now.”

Hank rolled his eyes. “Let’s talk about that later. Don’t say that in public. You’ll cause a panic. We’re all out this week on ‘a family emergency,’ by the way. If you end up teleporting or whatever, and someone asks, I didn’t specify the emergency.”

“Apparate!” Noah yelled. “Not teleport. Apparate!”

“Dork,” Jess muttered.

“Oh, shut up! You have a Ravenclaw bumper sticker on your car. I saw it,” Noah said, calling bullshit.

“I didn’t say I wasn’t a dork. I said that you definitely are a dork.”

“Beam me up, Sammy!” Ethan chuckled.

Sam glared at Ethan. “You know I hate being called that.”

Ethan grinned.

After a pause, Noah admitted, “That does have possibilities.”

“Where is the lake house?” Nora asked.

“Michigan,” Darla answered.

Clyde sighed. “How are you feeling, baby girl? Can I hug you yet?”

Adaline’s sad smile flashed at her dad for a second before she shook her head.

“She burned that boy yesterday and left a scar. Can we try after we do whatever this circle thing is?” Sam asked.

Clyde nodded, sliding a pair of iced teas down the bar to them.

“So, what’s going on in here? What’s with all the stuff?” Sam asked, looking at the back tables.

Adaline’s mouth dropped open in shock. “They brought me gifts? Love?”

“They started showing up this morning,” Ava said, smiling at her daughter.

“Mrs. Estien made you ice cream,” Jess said, tone sullen. “She’s never made me ice cream.”

“I refused to take Mr. Hangerst’s live chicken. He said to come by to watch his goats with him,” Ava said, not at all excited.

Adaline grinned. “No chicken?”

“Were you going to pluck it, oh great Mistress Life?” Ava glared.

“No, I would have let Mia and Meg play with it!” Adaline laughed.
